| To all parents, Watch out!!! We are now the target of the Traffic Enforcement Dept of Buffalo. Make sure you park off of the grass or you will be ticketed- (if you are the parent of a kid in SBSC)
July 6, 2011
Mr. Mayor or to whom it may concern:
I have to vehemently object to the poor treatment of the parents, volunteers, players in our organization, and the general public using the playground, spray pool and the soccer fields in Cazenovia Park. There has been a recent blitz of parking tickets to the parents of the soccer players in the park. Many are asking me for help.
Yes, the parents in Cazenovia Park are breaking the letter of the law by parking on the dirt or grass near the fields. I believe that in the spirit of the law everyone should receive a thank you for being a considerate neighbor by enabling traffic to move both ways. If they park on the street then there would be massive gridlock in the park as there would only be enough room for one vehicle to move. There is not enough room for traffic to safely move along at 15 mph in both directions. I have no problem with handing out tickets if there is adequate parking available but there is no room for everyone to park “legally” and allow normal traffic to flow safely. There are no curbs on the side where the majority of parents were ticketed. Mr. Olmstead’s vision of the park allowed for plenty of traffic to flow through the park. At the time of his vision for the park, there were only horses and buggies, not Minivans and SUV’s.
I heard on Tuesday night (6-28) they were ticketing Legally parked vehicles in the Tosh Collins parking lot. The traffic cop claimed they received a complaint from someone at Tosh and had to respond. I am not sure who could call and complain when the building was closed. My wife tried to use the bathrooms for our son that night yet the building was closed. (Last year there was a portable potty for public use but that is a different issue). Our permit does include the field use for Tosh Collins. Are you telling me we can use the fields but we can not park at the facilities?
Why is it okay for some organizations to park vehicles on the grass but not others? The officer was issuing tickets to our parents but did not go over to the Hidden Diamond and Golf parking lot which also had people parked on the grass. Why were we singled out? Did we do something to offend someone with enough political clout to cause pain to the parents of our organization? Is someone looking for a fight or are they trying to get rid of the soccer players from the park?
I have tried to stay out of the political arena as much as possible. I know Councilmember Kearns personally, and I happily support his efforts to improve our community. Is that reason enough to punish the parents of the 850 children in our organization? I have tried hard to do things right and not cause any problems with any organizations in the community. I have had my problems with the Olmstead Conservancy in the past but recently we have had a
wonderful win-win relationship. The park workers under P.J McPartland’s leadership could not be more helpful, friendly, or courteous. They have made accommodations to their schedules to meet our needs. We do our part to help them out as well by bringing in a large amount of people to show off their gem of a park! We also help out when needed with cases of field marking paint, we have planted grass seed where needed, we have helped with field maintenance and setup, and generally co-operating wherever needed.
The South Buffalo Soccer Club, not the City of Buffalo has purchased 4 sets of soccer goals over the last 4 years at considerable cost to the organization. We have had the permanent goals removed in an effort to allow the grass to grow better and to allow other organizations to be able to move the goals to meet their needs. We make sure the fields are left in the same (or better) condition than when we get there. I am often the last one to leave the parks and always clean up any trash that may be left behind. We often have to clean up after irresponsible dog owners who let their dog leave “treats” on or near the fields. I think we do more than our share to help the community of Buffalo.
Is this how we (coaches, parents, and athletes) are thanked for all the volunteering and community involvement, parking tickets? I find it objectionable that this is an acceptable practice. I was under the impression that we want to show off our city, not keep people away. The ticketing blitz downtown in the theatre district in the past has annoyed people enough to keep them from coming downtown. It now appears that the cash grab is “goin south”. I think the leadership is in need of a lesson on community from the community.
If you don’t want us to park safely near the fields, I hope you have a viable alternative, one that works for all the senior citizens through the 4 year olds in our community. If this was the act of one overzealous traffic cop, then all the tickets that were given out should be voided and the officer should be disciplined and told to avoid the parks in the future.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns. My home number is 822-3457.

| This note was sent to our local politicians because of the vandalism we noticed at Durant field yesterday:
To Whom it may concern:
Last night we (The South Buffalo Soccer Club) were forced to cancel the games at Durant Playground because there were 3-5 inch tiretracks all over the field. This act of vandalism actually put me over the edge. They ruin the nets regularly but we diligently repair or replace them to show them that they won't win the battle for control of the playground. I was called to the field last night because the tracks and divots ruined the field to the point where it is unusable. They ruined the nets with the vehicles to the point where they cannot be repaired with our limited resources. I have personally picked up the portapotty 6 times. On one occasion the 12-15 people on the park benches laughed at me and one person told me not to waste my time, they would just knock it down once I left. Sure enough, I drove past 5 minutes later and it was on it's side again.
We regularly remove the dog droppings off the field as the nieghbors don't feel it is their job to do so. Sometimes there are as many as 20 piles of droppings on the field. There is no pride left in the neighborhood.
The one negative thing I find with the county work crews was that the field was lined well, but someone must have noticed the tracks on the field but we were never notified. It would not have made much difference, we still would have made the same decision to cancel the games but it would have been helpful to hear about the vandalism when it was first noticed. In the future you can tell the crew that it is not necessary to line the field anymore. It will not be used by us.
Moving forward, we are forced to move to the Casino field in Cazenovia Park and Southside School. I hate to give up on the Durant Field because Mike Blake worked hard to have the soccer goals put there many years ago, but I should not have to fear for my safety when I ask a group of kids to stop swearing around the children. I don't feel comfortable there anymore.
I would like to request that the beat up portapotty at Durant Playground be moved to Southside School. There is a portapotty at the playground but the 4-5 year olds have a difficult time reaching the playground "in time". If it could be put near the entrance to the track, it would be great. Thanks to Tim Kennedy for getting the portapotties at the other fields! There are a lot less complaints this year!
I asked Mr Hornung if there is any greenspace available in South Buffalo that we can utilize to make more soccer fields. Maybe you can give me some ideas? The sport continues to grow and I'd like to be able to limit the field abuse by using more fields. Every year we have a conflict with the South Buffalo Football league because we both need Hillary Park. I would love to have the luxury of not needing to use those fields after Aug 1 but there aren't any extra fields around.
I would also like to take this opportunity to humbly ask for some funding in the future. The goalposts at Potter Rd, Tennis Courts, and Behind Tosh Collins are all anchored in the ground. I would like to purchase some semi-portable goals so we can move the lines each year a bit so the goal areas have a chance to grow grass. Each year we plant grass or lay sod in the goal areas but it never lasts because the field is used everyday and gets worn out usually before the season is underway. I'm sure Mr Hornung can give me 50 other reasons for the grass not growing but I think the time has come for some real goalposts. Thank you to Mickey Kearns for helping last year when our goals were stolen for scrap metal last year and to Mr Hornung for putting me in contact with another organization that had an extra set of goals. With the goals at Hillary, we are able to move the field each year and the fields remain in good condition. I hope to be able to do that on all fields.
Thank you for your time and please let me know if you are willing to help!

| I have had many people ask me if they can sign up their 3 year old to play in the 4-5 yr old division. I don't like to allow it unless they turn 4 over the summer. The other exception I allow is when the kids parent is the coach. It is difficult enough to keep 15 4 and 5 year old kids motivated and interested in soccer, it is too much to ask a coach to babysit a 3 year old. I will sign up my 3 year old next year when he is 4. |
